Portsmouth BookFest, part of In Our Words, offers a diverse programme of literary events for all ages from February 18 to March 9, including author talks, creative workshops, film screenings, and performances, with many free and low-cost activities available.
Organized by Portsmouth City Council, the annual BookFest is part of In Our Words, a year-long celebration of literature and literacy by Portsmouth Creates, which supports the city's cultural and creative community.
This year's programme features a diverse array of events, activities, and talks, welcoming both literature enthusiasts and general audiences.

Tea Party with The Tiger Who Came to Tea (Feb 18-20): A delightful event for children aged 2-10 at various libraries.
The Book Thief Film Screening (Feb 20): A community-curated showing of The Book Thief (PG-13) at The Lens Studio.
Fairytales Through Puppetry (Feb 21): A magical performance by Tigerboat Theatre Company for children aged 2-5 at Carnegie and North End Libraries.
Soundtrack the Story Workshop (Feb 21): A creative workshop for children aged 11-16.
Zine Making Workshop (Feb 22): Hosted at the University of Portsmouth Library.
Moonstruck Creative Writing Session (Feb 22): Led by Lynne Stretch for children aged 7-11.
Helen Lederer in Conversation (Feb 28): The comedian, actress, and writer discusses her book Not That I’m Bitter.
Vernon Bogdanor on Post-War Politics (Mar 3): An insightful discussion on six key political figures shaping British politics at Portsmouth Central Library.
Crime Bites Series (Mar 5-9):
Caitlin Davies on female detectives (Mar 5, virtual event).
Sarah Harris & Josie Lloyd on cosy and young adult crime fiction (Mar 7).
Pauline Rowson returns to Portsmouth (Mar 8).
DJ Simon Mayo presents his thriller Black Tag (Mar 9).
Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, emphasized the accessibility of BookFest:
"This year’s line-up offers something for everyone, regardless of age or budget. With many low-cost and free events, we encourage residents to visit their local library or check the website to secure a spot."
